President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a university.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, confirmed this during a visit to the school.

The minister stated that President Tinubu approved the proposal without hesitation.
The final steps, including official documentation and necessary procedures, are now in progress.
The minister acknowledged YABATECH’s strong academic workforce, noting that over 200 staff members hold doctorate degrees in various fields.
Rector’s Statement
The Rector, Dr Ibrahim Abdul, expressed appreciation and emphasised the institution’s capacity to function as a university.
He stressed that YABATECH aims to be a technical and vocational university, focused on solving real-world problems.
Governing Council’s Support
The Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof Funso Afolabi, thanked the minister for visiting.
He urged the Federal Government to provide necessary support to help the institution transition smoothly.
