Subject Combination / JAMB UTME Requirements


In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combination needed to study French under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities in the above listed universities include;

French and any other two (2) subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) ABSU accepts Literature in English and two (2) other Arts or Social Science subjects.

(ii) BABCOCK requires Literature in English.

(iii) UNIBEN accepts any three (3) subjects from Arts, Science or Social Sciences

(iv) BSU and UNN require French, Literature in English and any other Arts subject.

(v) UNICAL requires Literature in English, CRS and either History or Government.

(vi) KWASU requires two (2) other Arts subjects. (vii) LAGOS accepts English Language and any three Arts or Social Sciences.

(viii) OAU, UI, EKSU, OOU, UNIZIK and ABSU accept any three (3) subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.

(ix) UNIOSUN requires Government or History plus any other Arts Subjects.

(x) UNIZIK accepts any three (3) Arts or Social Science subject. French is not compulsory.

(xi) DELSU requires one Arts subject and any other two (2) from Arts and Social Sciences.

(xii) UNIMAID requires any three (3) subjects.

(xiii) UNIPORT requires French and any other two (2) subjects from Literature in English, History/Government, CRK/IRK, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry Agricultural Science, Physics, Igbo/Hausa/Yoruba, Fine Art, Geography, Commerce.

(xiv) UMYU requires French and any other two (2) Arts subjects.

(xv) IAUED requires English Language and any three from Mathematics, History, Government, Economics, Religious & Cultural Studies, Music, Fine Arts, Commerce, Igbo, Yoruba, Literature in English, Social Studies, Accounting or any other course in Arts and Social Sciences.

(xvi) UNILORIN requires English Language and any other three Arts or Social science Subjects.

(xvii) ABU requires Use of English, French and any other two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences

(xviii) KASU requires French and two other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.

O’Level Requirements


The O’level subject combination and requirements needed to study French;

You require;

Five (5) SSCE credit passes including French and English Language plus one (1) other Arts subject.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) ABSU requires ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language and four (4) other subjects for the 5- year Programme.

(ii) BSU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences including French and English Language.

(iii) BSU, DELSU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in Literature in English and other Arts or Social Science subject.. 

(iv) UNICAL requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics, Government, History, CRS, Commerce, Agricultural Science or Biology, Geography, Economics and any Nigerian Indigenous Language. Knowledge of French or Spanish is only an advantage but NOT a requirement.

(v) CU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in French, English Language, Mathematics, one Science subject from the following Biology, Health/General Science, Agricultural Science, Physics and Chemistry or its equivalent of CEF or PIDELF awarded by Alliance Française or the Pre-Degree Certificate in French from any recognised University.

(vi) EKSU and UNIUYO accept Proficiency Certificate in French. UNIUYO accepts Proficiency Certificate in French from University of UYO and certificate in French from the Alliance Franҫaise.

(vii) UI accepts five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at one or two (2) sittings to include Literature in English and other Arts and Social Science subjects.

(viii) UNILORIN accepts English Language, Mathematics and any other three Arts or Social science subjects.

(ix) KASU accepts Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, French and two other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences

(x) KWASU requires three (3) other Arts subjects.

(xi) UNILAG requires Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three Arts or Social Sciences. Civic Education and Computer Studies are also accepted.

(xii) NSUK accepts NCE merit pass in French.

(xiii) OAU – ‘O’ Level credit pass in French is not compulsory.

(xiv) UMYU accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes or its equivalent in English Language, French, and any other three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects and ‘O’ Level credit pass in Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.

(xv) UNIOSUN requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes or its equivalent in English Language, Government or History and any other three (3) subjects.

(xvi) UNIZIK accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, French and two (2) other Arts subjects and one Social Science subject.

(xvii) UNIZIK, UNIBEN and OAU accept candidates with no previous knowledge of French. For UNIBEN, candidates should have ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language and Literature in English while UNIZIK gives accelerated course in French in the first year.

(xviii) UNN requires/accepts for:
a) French Single Honours, a minimum of five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include French, English Language, one science subject and two (2) other Arts subjects one of which must be Literature in English.
b) German Single Honours, a minimum of five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, one science subject and three (3) other Arts subjects, one of which must be Literature in English.​​​​​​​ Also any language proficiency certificate from the Goethe Institute will be a great advantage.
c) French with German/Russia, ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, French, one science subject and two (2) other Arts subjects one of which must be Literature in English.
d) Candidates who are successful in its one year preparatory programme in French, a minimum score of 40% plus UTME requirements.

(xix) NDA requires two (2) Arts and Social Science subjects from Economics, Geography, Government, Civic Education, History, Arabic, CRS//IS and any other Nigerian Language.

(xx) DELSU accepts Five (5) credit level passes at SSCE/NECO/GCE ‘O’ Level which may include Mathematics, English Language & four other subjects from Arts and Social Science.

(xxi) UNIPORT accepts Five (5) SSC credits in English Language, and any other four (4) subjects from French, Literature in English, History/Government, CRK/IRK, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Physics, Igbo/Hausa/Yoruba, Fine Art, Geography, Commerce.

(xxii) IAUED requires O’ Level credit passes at the GCE, WAEC/SSCE or NECO level in five subjects in the Arts and Social Sciences, including English and Mathematics, at not more than two (2) sittings.

(xxiii) ABU requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language and French plus any​​​​​​​ other Arts or Social Sciences subjects.

(xxiv) FUL requires Five (5) Credit passes at SSCE, GCE, NECO and NABTEB O’ Level examination including English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and two other relevant subjects in not more than two sittings.​​​​​​​

Direct Entry Requirements


These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study French, if you don’t intend to use UTME.

You require;

Two (2) ‘A’ level passes including French and one (1) other Arts subject.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAU accepts:
a) NCE merit in French and one other Arts subject.
b) NCE Double major in French.

(ii) ABSU accepts:
a) Candidates with two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Arts into the 4-year programme.
b) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes including French at IJMB/NCE. General English/Use of English at NCE satisfies UTME English Language requirement.

(iii) BUK accepts NCE in French and any French Baccalaureate ‘A’ Level.

(iv) BSU accepts two (2) NCE passes to include French and one other Arts subject.

(v) UNICAL accepts:

a) Five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings to include English Language, plus two (2) ‘A’ Level passes one of which must be in French.

b) Four (4) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings to include English Language, plus three (3) ‘A’ Level passes one of which must be in French.

c) Five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings to include English Language, plus two (2) NCE merit or credit passes of which one must be in French.

(vi) DELSU:

a) Candidate must have at least a merit pass in French and one other Art subject at the NCE level

b) GCE A/L passes should include French and one other Arts subject.

c) Certified Diploma in French from a recognized Institute like the Nigerian French Language Village and the likes will be accepted in place of A level French.

(vii) UI accepts NCE merit including French and one other subject from Arts and Social Science subject. Ibadan accepts candidates without ‘O’ level in French.

(viii) UNILORIN accepts At least two A level passes including french and one other Arts or Social science subjects.This is applicable for NCE,OND,IJMB,JUPEB, and GCE A level.

(ix) KWASU accepts ND, NCE with French as principal subject. Requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects.

(x) UNILAG accepts Very good passes in JUPEB/A’ Level subjects: French and any two of Igbo/Yoruba, CRS/IRS, History, Government, Literature-in-English, Music and Fine Arts. NCE in French/NFLV, Diploma/Diplôme Supérieur (MODULE III), DALF (France), CEGEP (Canada), Baccalaureate, CAP and BTS.

(xi) OAU accepts NCE merit pass in French (Nigeria French Language Village) and the Baccalaureate from Francophone countries. Note that a

a) three (3) or four (4)-year programme includes a year at the Nigerian French Village, Badagry. All expenses will be borne by the student’s sponsors.

b) four (4)-year intensive programme including a year at the Nigerian French Language Village is also available for candidates without any previous knowledge of French.

(xii) UNIPORT accepts Two (2) A/level passes in GCE or HSC or JUPEB or IJMB including French and one other Arts subject including UTME entry requirements NCE in French and any other Arts subject with an overall merit level pass from a recognized College of Education, including UTME entry requirements Baccalauréat (with Arts option) including UTME entry requirements DELF/DALF International Certificate (Level B2), including UTME entry requirements

(xiii) UNIOSUN requires ‘A’ Level passes in French and Government or History and any other Arts or Social Science subject. Accepts ND and approved equivalent in relevant programme with at least a lower credit. The NCE is acceptable as ‘A’ Level equivalent.

(xiv) UNIZIK accepts NCE to include a pass in French and accepts Baccalaureat de l’enseignement – merite secondaire or equivalent.

(xv) UNIZIK, EKSU, UNIJOS and UNIUYO accept NCE plus ‘O’ Level credit pass in English Language.

(xvi) UNN accepts:
a) NCE merit in two (2) relevant subjects as well as the UTME requirements.
b) Two (2) passes at GCE ‘A’ Level/HSC or its equivalent, DALF certificate or an acceptable Baccalaureate Certificate in relevant subjects.

(xvii) UNIUYO accepts NCE with credit in French.

(xviii) UMYU accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level credit passes in French plus three (3) ‘O’ Level credits in Three (3) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. Or three (3) ‘A’ Level passes plus two (2) ‘O’ Level credits in two (2) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings. It also accepts two (2) merit passes at NCE in French and Education. One merit or lower credit plus at least four (4) relevant subjects in SSC/GCE.

(xix) UNILORIN requires English Language, Mathematics and any other three Arts or Social science subjects.

(xx) ABU accepts Two ‘A’ level papers including French at IJMB/NCE, or a minimum of Merit at Diploma in French or with other Arts/Social science subjects

(xxi) FUL accepts In addition to the UTME requirements, DE Candidates must have any of the following: 2 GCE (Advance Level) credit passes one of which must be in French. NCE: Merit pass in French and any other relevant subjects. ND: Lower credit pass in French and any relevant subjects/HND. IJMB: Minimum of 9 points in three subjects, one of which must be French and any relevant subjects.

(xxii) KASU accepts Two ‘A’ passes to include French at IJMB/NCE. General English, Use of English at NCE, Lower Credit in National Diploma in addition to ‘O’ Level requirements. Baccalaureate merit or equivalent from Francophone Countries. Alliance Francaise Higher Diploma Upper Level in addition to ‘O’ Level requirements

(xxiii) IAUED accepts;

a) GCE A ‘Level or Baccalaureate equivalent from Francophone countries

b) Merit in French at NCE level

c) DELF B1/B2 or DALF C1/C2

d) Diploma in French (Nigeria French Language Village) in addition to the departmental UTME requirements. The above requirements qualify the candidate into the 200 level of the degree programme.
