(b). State two uses of each specimen K and L.
Specimen K; Specimen L;
(ii) State two structural differences between specimens K and L.
(iii) Mention two problems that could result from leaving specimen L on the field after use.
Explanation
(a) (i) Field operation that could be performed using specimens G, H, I and J; Farm surveying
(ii) Other equipment that may be added to specimens GH, l and J to perform the operation, mentioned in (a)(i)
- Levelling staff
- Abney level.
- Dumpy level
- Theodolite.
- Prismatic compass
- Gunter's chain/ metric chain/engineer's chain
- Offset staff/pin
(iii) Precaution that should be taken when using specimen J (Garden line)
- Do not drag /rub against rough surfaces/edges
- Do not pull too hard when taking measurements to avoid damage/snapping
- Properly tie to the pole to avoid accidental release when in use and to ensure accurate readings
- Must be straight and horizontal for accurate measurements
(b)(i) Uses of specimens K and L.
Uses of specimen K(Hand trowel) -
- Transplanting of seedlings
- Planting of seeds
- Application of fertilizers/manure
- Loosening of soils
- Mixing of fertilizers
- For light weeding
Uses of specimen L (Mattock) -
- Digging of soil
- Uprooting stumps from farmlands
- Removal of stones
- Clearing of bush
- Land preparation
- Breaking hard pans on farmlands
(ii) Structural differences between specimen K and L
- Specimen K (Hand trowel) has a boat-shaped blade whereas, Specimen L (MΓ‘ttock) has a thick block of iron blade
- Specimen K (Hand trowel) has a short wooden cylindrical handle whereas; specimen L(Mattock) has a long cylindrical wooden handle
- Specimen K (Hand trowel) total length is about 30cm whereas; specimen L total length is about 100cm.
- Specimen K( Hand trowel) blade is pointed only at one end whereas, specimen L (Mattock) one end of the blade is long, blocky and. pointed, and the other broad, flat and sharp at the other end which is also metallic.
(iii) Problems that could result from leaving specimen L(Mattock) on the field after use
- Wooden handle may be attacked by termites
- Metal blade will rust on contact with water
- Farm machinery may run over and damage it or may be damaged
- It may injure farm workers
- Could be stolen
